Reddit tests ads in search results amid declining traffic and growth concerns
Reddit begins piloting ads in search results to increase revenue as AI search impacts its traffic and stock value.
Reddit has started testing advertisements within its search results pages, aiming to generate more revenue from its current users, according to TechCrunch and The Verge. The ads will be shown based on factors such as the contextual relevance to users' search queries.
Examples given include searches for 'espresso station' potentially displaying ads for espresso machines, coffee, or mugs, while a search for 'home office setup' may show ads for monitors, desks, and office chairs. This test involves a select group of advertisers as Reddit evaluates user responses.
This move comes after Reddit reported a decline in search traffic referrals, which it attributes to changes in Google's AI-powered search experience. Despite beating revenue and earnings estimates in the third quarter, Reddit's stock value dropped following the announcement of lower-than-expected fourth-quarter sales guidance.
Reddit has also introduced other platform changes recently, such as new Following and For You feeds and plans to make the site a logged-in-only experience to counteract AI scraping by Google, which has further influenced its stock performance.
The company will continue to assess the impact of search ads on user experience and advertiser outcomes during this initial testing phase before deciding on broader implementation.
