Rioters loot stores during protests against cost of living in Germany
Violence erupted after peaceful protests in multiple German cities over rising living costs.
Tensions escalated into violence during protests against the rising cost of living in Germany, CBS News reported. While the demonstrations were largely peaceful during the day, masked rioters smashed storefronts and looted goods late Saturday in Frankfurt and other cities.
The protests were led by a youth initiative called "Gen Z regelt," which organized rallies in over 30 cities advocating for education, health, climate protection, and affordable living, as well as opposing military conscription. Tens of thousands participated across the country, according to organizers.
Clashes between some protesters and police occurred in major cities including Berlin, Cologne, Hamburg, and Frankfurt. In Frankfurt, rioters threw stones, fireworks, pepper bombs, and Molotov cocktails at police, and looters stole weapons from a gun store, though authorities later recovered them.
In Hamburg, some demonstrators shot pyrotechnics at police and set barricades on fire, prompting police to use water cannons and tear gas to disperse crowds. Earlier in Berlin, young protesters gathered peacefully at Brandenburg Gate demanding increased investment in education and housing.
Students highlighted issues such as deteriorating school infrastructure, teacher shortages, and broken facilities, calling for more government funding to improve social services and climate protection efforts, emphasizing their stake in the future.
The protests reflect widespread youth concerns about social and economic issues amid rising living costs in Germany, with authorities responding to unrest with law enforcement measures.
