San Diego’s Democratic Socialists see growth and new political involvement
Local Democratic Socialists of America chapter has nearly tripled in size and increased election activity in San Diego.
The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) chapter in San Diego has experienced significant growth, nearly tripling its membership over the past two years, according to Voice of San Diego. The group has become more active in local elections and political events, signaling a shift from being a political nonentity to a more influential presence in the city.
A recent climate town hall event in the Rolando area, co-hosted by the DSA and environmental group San Diego 350, drew dozens of attendees. Many participants wore DSA-branded apparel and engaged in discussions, highlighting the organization’s increased visibility in the community.
The DSA’s platform, broadly advocating for a more equal distribution of resources, includes ideas such as higher taxes on the wealthy and government-provided healthcare, which have gained popularity in recent years. The group aims to recruit dynamic local politicians, as seen by the involvement of San Diego City Councilmember Sean Elo-Rivera and County Supervisor Paloma Aguirre, who appeared on event materials despite not being a DSA member.
Members of the DSA have actively supported candidates like Supervisor Aguirre during her 2025 campaign, reflecting their growing influence in local Democratic politics. The chapter’s expansion and election involvement suggest a new phase for socialist politics in San Diego.
