A San Francisco startup, Mochi Health, has introduced two British Shorthair cats named Muffin and Butter to its office as part of efforts to encourage employees to return to in-person work, CBS News Bay Area reported.

The company combines other perks such as poker games, free DoorDash meals, and comfortable workspaces to create a welcoming office environment, according to CEO Myra Ahmad.

Unlike office dogs, the cats require less supervision and do not need to be taken outside, making them a calm presence in the workspace, Ahmad explained.

A survey cited by CBS News Bay Area found that nearly half of employed pet owners consider a pet-friendly workplace when evaluating job offers, with many willing to leave jobs or take pay cuts for pet-friendly policies.

Marketing associate Chanelle Mao said the cats influenced her decision to join Mochi Health despite her allergies; the company provides air filters and other accommodations to help her manage symptoms.

Mochi Health's use of office cats has helped naturally bring employees back together, suggesting other workplaces might consider similar approaches to improve morale and attendance.
