NFL tells Brandon Aiyuk to repay 49ers $13 million in bonuses
Brandon Aiyuk must repay $13 million to the 49ers as he seeks reinstatement, NFL informs him in a letter.
The NFL has informed receiver Brandon Aiyuk that he owes the San Francisco 49ers about $13 million in bonuses previously paid to him, CBS News Bay Area reported. This development comes as Aiyuk attempts to get reinstated to the 49ers' roster.
Aiyuk submitted paperwork to the NFL for reinstatement and met with team officials near Levi's Stadium, accompanied by his new agent Drew Rosenhaus. Rosenhaus said Aiyuk is physically healthy and ready to return to work.
The league sent a letter to Aiyuk and the NFL Players Association stating the repayment demand is based on bonuses linked to a four-year, $120 million contract extension signed before the 2024 season, according to a source who spoke anonymously to the Associated Press.
Coach Kyle Shanahan said he has no involvement in the matter and has moved on from the situation, emphasizing it is no distraction for the team. The meeting between Aiyuk and team officials lasted about an hour, with Rosenhaus declining to provide details.
The Ringer initially reported the 49ers' effort to recoup the money from Aiyuk.
