Santa Clara County refuses DOJ request for voter data on noncitizens
County officials reject DOJ's demand to identify suspected noncitizen voters, citing the request as unlawful.
Santa Clara County officials have announced they will not comply with a request from the U.S. Department of Justice to provide voter data identifying individuals suspected of being noncitizens.
The DOJ had threatened election officials with criminal prosecution if they failed to identify 'suspected aliens who are registered to vote,' according to San Jose Inside.
This demand came after the Trump administration sought to set aside votes from 20,000 people it claimed could be noncitizens, but the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeal rejected this attempt on Monday.
County officials described the DOJ request as 'unlawful' and have stood firm against providing the requested voter information.
The situation highlights ongoing tensions between federal authorities and local election officials regarding voter data and election integrity.
