Senator Chris Van Hollen of Maryland has decided not to challenge Senator Chuck Schumer of New York for the position of Senate majority leader, according to a source close to Van Hollen who spoke to NewsNation, The Hill's sister network.

The source indicated that Van Hollen believes the Democratic caucus should first have an open and honest discussion about the direction of the party before selecting a majority leader.

Meanwhile, Senator-elect Abdul El-Sayed of Michigan reiterated his support for Van Hollen to become the Senate majority leader instead of Schumer during an interview on CNN News Central.

El-Sayed, who was elected in Michigan, had previously endorsed Van Hollen for the leadership role in May and reaffirmed his position on Thursday morning.
