The state budget has allocated $4.5 million to reconnect communities in San Diego and National City that were divided by freeways, KPBS reported.

San Diego and National City were selected for the state's 'Reconnecting Communities' program in 2024, but the program had not received funding until this year.

The funding aims to support projects that help bridge neighborhoods separated by freeway infrastructure, improving connectivity and community cohesion.

This initiative represents a step toward addressing the long-term impacts of freeway construction on local communities in the San Diego area.

KPBS highlighted that the program's funding will enable planning and implementation of projects to physically and socially reconnect affected neighborhoods.
