The California Highway Patrol reported the fire started around 5:35 p.m. in the southbound lanes between Winton Avenue and the Highway 92 interchange.
Officials closed all lanes of I-880 in both directions due to concerns about hazardous chemical smoke from the fire.
The northbound lanes reopened shortly before 9 p.m., while the southbound lanes remained closed until about 3:30 p.m. the following day.
No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation by authorities.
