Aging Untold discusses intimacy and clinical trials for older adults
Richmond experts share advice on maintaining intimacy and participating in clinical trials as health changes with age.
NBC12 reported on an episode of Aging Untold that focused on how aging and illness can impact intimacy for older adults and couples. The program shared practical ways for couples to communicate openly and safely navigate sex after a diagnosis.
Gerontologist Sam Cradduck emphasized the importance of understanding the underlying causes of changes in intimacy, noting that competence and consent are key considerations. Physical issues such as erectile dysfunction may be addressed with medical help, according to the report.
Board-certified physician Dr. Rhea Rogers highlighted a common misconception that intimacy and sexuality are the same, pointing out that they are distinct. She also discussed the underrepresentation of older adults in clinical trials and the potential benefits of participation.
Dr. Rogers advised that before joining a clinical trial, individuals should consider the trial's purpose and understand that participation can provide early access to new treatments, devices, and therapies. Aging expert Amy O’Rourke added that participants should be aware they might receive a placebo during a trial.
The episode also featured a 91-year-old world record holder in track and field, demonstrating that staying active has no age limit. The discussion aimed to empower older adults in Richmond and beyond to address intimacy changes and explore clinical trial options.
NBC12’s Aging Untold provides resources and encourages older adults to ask questions and seek medical advice to maintain quality of life as they age.
