Baltimore County Council approves 73.6% pay raise amid mixed reactions
Baltimore County Council voted to increase members' salaries by 73.6%, sparking debate among residents about the decision's timing and justification.
The Baltimore County Council voted along party lines to approve a 73.6% salary increase for its members, the county executive, and the county administrative officer, according to The Baltimore Banner and FOX45 Baltimore. The new pay structure will take effect after the November election, raising council members' salaries to $119,750 annually.
The vote saw Democrats Mike Ertel, Julian Jones, Izzy Patoka, and Pat Young supporting the increase, while Republicans David Marks and Nino Mangione opposed it. Republican Todd Crandell was absent. The council chair's salary will also increase by 68.5%, from $77,000 to $129,750, with Ertel currently holding the chair position.
Supporters like Councilmember Izzy Patoka highlighted the extensive workload council members face, including responding to constituent communications on various issues. Patoka expressed hope for a unanimous vote acknowledging these efforts. Conversely, opponents like Mangione argued the raise was ill-timed given ongoing local challenges such as limited police coverage and infrastructure problems, suggesting funds might be better allocated elsewhere.
The council is expanding from seven to nine members, which will reduce the number of residents represented by each member from about 120,000 to 95,000. The expanded council is projected to be more diverse, potentially including at least one Black woman, one Latino man, and two members under 30 years old, with the general election scheduled for November 3 and early voting beginning Thursday.
Residents voiced mixed opinions on the pay raise. Some expressed concern over the increase, feeling it was excessive and disconnected from taxpayers' struggles. Others supported the raise, citing the increasing responsibilities and challenges council members face in managing county affairs, according to statements collected by FOX45 Baltimore.
The Baltimore County Council's decision to increase salaries comes as the council prepares for its expansion and upcoming elections, with the new pay structure set to take effect after the election.
