Beltsville Agricultural Research Center’s future uncertain amid USDA relocation plans

USDA says it’s proceeding with relocating Beltsville center workers despite court-ordered pause and spending bill restrictions.

The future of the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center in Maryland remains uncertain as the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) navigates conflicting directives regarding its relocation plan, The Baltimore Banner reported.

While the Trump administration has publicly stated it is moving "full-bore ahead" with plans to relocate workers and restructure the center to cut costs and be closer to affected areas, a federal court in California ordered a pause on the plan on October 14, according to the Banner.

In a court filing on October 22, USDA’s acting principal deputy assistant secretary for administration, Mary Pletcher Rice, stated the agency would not close or consolidate the Beltsville facility or other Agricultural Research Service locations. The filing also noted an extension of the closure pause until December 11, 2026, coinciding with the expiration of a spending bill that bars such reorganizations without congressional approval.

U.S. Representative Glenn Ivey, whose district includes Beltsville, highlighted the confusion caused by the administration’s contradictory statements and expressed concern for the employees affected by the uncertainty. He described the situation as difficult for the researchers who continue their work amid unclear directives.

The USDA’s next steps will likely depend on congressional action and further legal developments, as the current spending bill restricts the agency from proceeding without approval.

Local residents and stakeholders are watching closely as the future of this key agricultural research hub remains in flux.
