Commanders adjust coaching roles ahead of Sunday game against Eagles
Washington Commanders change defensive coaching roles and add Steve Wilks to sideline staff for Sunday night game.
The Washington Commanders are making adjustments to their defensive coaching staff ahead of their Sunday night game against the Philadelphia Eagles, The Baltimore Banner reported. Defensive coordinator Daronte Jones swapped the roles of coaches responsible for pass and run defense in an effort to improve the unit's performance, which has allowed 28.7 points per game, ranking 31st in the NFL.
In addition to the role reversal, the Commanders brought in Steve Wilks, a former NFL head coach and recent defensive coordinator for the New York Jets, to assist with defensive game planning. Head coach Dan Quinn said Wilks would contribute early in the week and will wear a headset on the sidelines during the game against the Eagles, though not for every game.
The changes come as the Commanders hold a 1-4-1 record and face a Philadelphia Eagles team missing its star quarterback and several starters. The Commanders also placed their top wide receiver Terry McLaurin on injured reserve after he tore his patellar tendon in Week 6, ending his season.
Quinn described Wilks' addition as "just another set of eyes" and noted the coaching adjustments started about two weeks ago. The team hopes these changes will lead to more defensive stops and help salvage their season.
