Billy Corgan, frontman of The Smashing Pumpkins, has publicly defended his friendship with Marilyn Manson despite multiple sexual assault and domestic violence allegations against the shock rocker, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Corgan spoke about their nearly 30-year relationship on the New York Times 'Popcast,' stating he did not feel Manson was guilty of the accusations and emphasizing that he does not want others to dictate who he associates with, Variety reported.

He acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations but noted that the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office investigated for several years and ultimately decided not to pursue criminal charges, citing the statute of limitations and insufficient evidence to prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Corgan described his stance as consistent with his Christian faith, saying standing by friends does not preclude having opinions or being critical. He also mentioned knowing personal details not publicly disclosed that influenced his perspective.

The relationship between the two musicians is further connected by family ties, as Manson's wife is the twin sister of The Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha, noted Variety.

The DA's office also expressed recognition of the courage of the women who came forward, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
