California sends election watchers to key voting sites including San Jose area
Governor Newsom announced teams of election attorneys and volunteers will monitor voting locations in the state on Election Day.
California Governor Gavin Newsom announced the state is deploying teams of election attorneys and trained volunteers to monitor key voting locations on Election Day, CBS News Bay Area reported. This effort aims to ensure election integrity and prevent illegal ballot seizures, which have been made a felony in California.
The Department of Justice had earlier planned to have observers at important voter locations and has been involved in legal battles over mail-in ballots, but a federal judge ruled in favor of California's authority to administer its own elections. The DOJ has informed local election offices, including those in Sacramento County, about their observers' presence on Election Day.
Governor Newsom stated that 134 election law attorneys and volunteers will be assigned to monitor key congressional districts across the state, including congressional districts CA-6, CA-13, CA-22, CA-45 and CA-48. This move is intended to prevent voter intimidation and interference during the election process.
The announcement has drawn mixed reactions. Sue Blake, chair of the Sacramento County Republican Party, noted the presence of multiple layers of watchers to oversee the election process. Meanwhile, Mindy Romero, director of the nonpartisan Center for Inclusive Democracy, expressed concern that the situation could become overly politicized, emphasizing the need to protect democracy for all voters.
