Charleston voters to decide on school board, congressional race, and sales tax
Charleston County voters face key decisions Nov. 3 on congressional representation, school board seats, and a transportation sales tax referendum.
Voters in South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District, which includes much of the Tri-County area, will elect a new representative on November 3, according to ABC News 4 WCIV. The race features Republican Jenny Costa Honeycutt and Democrat Nancy Lacore competing for the seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace. The Cook Political Report recently changed the race rating to Toss-up, highlighting Lacore’s fundraising lead and the district’s competitive nature.
In Charleston County, several important local issues will also be on the ballot. These include multiple school board races, with some incumbents seeking reelection and one open seat following the departure of Board Chair Pam McKinney, WCIV reported.
A significant ballot measure is the Charleston County Transportation Sales Tax (TST) referendum. The county council approved placing a half-cent sales tax question on the ballot to continue the existing transportation sales tax program, which began in 2004 and is set to end in 2027. If approved, the new 25-year TST would generate approximately $4.25 billion for infrastructure and transit projects across Charleston County.
These races and measures are part of a broader set of contests and decisions affecting the Tri-County area, with voters weighing in on state house races and other local initiatives, according to WCIV.
