Charlotte Hornets to retire Muggsy Bogues’ No. 1 jersey in 2027
The Hornets will honor Muggsy Bogues by retiring his jersey at halftime of a February 2027 game at the Spectrum Center.
The Charlotte Hornets announced they will retire the No. 1 jersey of Muggsy Bogues, one of the franchise's greatest players, during halftime of the February 11, 2027 game against the Milwaukee Bucks at the Spectrum Center, WBTV reported.
Bogues, the shortest player in NBA history at 5-foot-3, was an original member of the Charlotte Hornets, spending 10 of his 14 NBA seasons with the team. He holds franchise records for assists with 5,557, minutes played with 19,768, assists per game at 8.8, and steals with 1,067, according to WBTV.
He helped lead the Hornets to three seasons with over 50 wins, including a franchise-best 54–28 record in the 1996–1997 season, and four playoff appearances. Bogues also led Charlotte to its first postseason series victory in 1993, WBTV noted.
Bogues played college basketball at Wake Forest, where he earned All-ACC honors and led the conference in assists and steals as a senior in 1986-87. His No. 14 jersey was retired by Wake Forest in 1987, and he was inducted into their hall of fame in 2001, WBTV reported.
Bogues expressed gratitude for the honor and the support he received from Hornets fans and the Charlotte community, calling the city home for many years and looking forward to sharing the jersey retirement night with his family and fans.
