Democrat Nancy Lacore leads in close SC 1st Congressional District race
Nancy Lacore holds a slim lead over Republican Jenny Costa Honeycutt in South Carolina's 1st District, heading toward an automatic recount.
South Carolina's 1st Congressional District is poised for an automatic recount after Democrat Nancy Lacore held a narrow lead over Republican Jenny Costa Honeycutt, according to ABC News 4 WCIV. With 98% of votes counted, Lacore led 49.5% to 48.8%, a margin of fewer than 2,500 votes.
The seat became open when incumbent Rep. Nancy Mace decided to run for governor instead of seeking a fourth term. Both Lacore and Honeycutt campaigned vigorously, emphasizing different priorities to appeal to voters in this competitive race.
Lacore focused on restoring financial freedom, addressing healthcare costs, housing affordability, and opportunities for young families. She also highlighted protecting South Carolina’s coast, securing the border, reproductive rights, and reducing the influence of big money in politics as key issues, ABC News 4 WCIV reported.
Despite the uncertainty, Lacore expressed confidence in a victory during her late-night speech, promising to work with anyone serious about tackling issues and improving South Carolina families' futures. Honeycutt thanked her supporters but did not concede, leaving the final outcome pending the recount.
If Lacore maintains her lead, it would represent a significant Democratic gain in a district previously held by Republicans with comfortable margins, reflecting broader trends in the 2026 midterms in South Carolina and nationwide.
The recount process and final certification of results will determine who will represent the 1st District in Congress moving forward.
