Voters handed Democrats control of the Senate in the midterm elections, flipping Republican-held seats in states including North Carolina, Ohio, Iowa, Texas, South Carolina, and Kansas, according to PBS NewsHour Politics.

The results were seen as a rebuke to President Donald Trump, who had personally supported many Republican candidates and campaigned in conservative states urging voters to consider him as if he were on the ballot.

Trump defended his policies on tariffs and the war with Iran, which had contributed to high costs, but he shifted blame for the losses onto the Republican candidates themselves during a Fox News interview, as reported by PBS NewsHour.

With Democrats controlling the Senate, they will have increased power to investigate the Trump administration and block his Cabinet and judicial nominees, shifting the political balance toward Capitol Hill.

In a call with CBS News, Trump congratulated the Democrats on their wins and expressed willingness to work with them for the country's good, emphasizing that he was not on the ballot this election cycle, according to The Hill.
