FBI and state police assist Richmond schools after cyberattack
Richmond Public Schools work with federal and state authorities to restore systems after a cybersecurity incident disrupted operations.
Richmond Public Schools are collaborating with the FBI and Virginia State Police following a cybersecurity incident detected on October 21, according to WTVR CBS 6. The district reported that critical safety systems remain secure despite the disruption.
The incident led to the district taking internet access offline as a precaution, which affected phone and email services as well as access to online classroom tools and learning platforms. Despite these challenges, schools remained open, shifting to a technology-free learning environment.
To adapt, the district set up a temporary network and distributed Chromebooks to students. However, teachers reported difficulties adjusting lessons without internet access or digital resources, as noted by one teacher who relied heavily on Google Drive for materials.
Federal and state investigators' involvement marks a significant step in addressing the incident, which has disrupted Richmond Public Schools for over a week. The district continues efforts to restore full system functionality while maintaining safety and educational operations.
