Financial issues surface in National City mayoral race
National City mayoral candidates debate financial management amid unpaid travel reimbursements and foreclosure.
The National City mayoral race has come under scrutiny as candidate Marcus Bush faces criticism over financial mismanagement, Voice of San Diego reported. Bush has not reimbursed the city for $4,015 in travel expenses paid on his behalf for two public transportation conferences in 2024 and 2025.
Jose Rodriguez, a National City councilmember and Bush's opponent, accused Bush of trying to "line his pockets with public funds" and questioned his fitness to lead the city. Rodriguez's campaign shared public records showing Bush's recent home foreclosure, an unpaid traffic ticket, and the unreimbursed travel costs.
City finance records indicate that the city initially covered Bush's travel expenses expecting reimbursement from the Metropolitan Transportation System (MTS). While MTS reimbursed Bush, he did not repay the city. City Manager Doug Schulze noted Bush has made two payments of $250 each but still owes about $3,500.
Bush acknowledged his financial struggles over the past year and said they contributed to the situation. He also criticized Rodriguez for focusing on his personal finances, calling it a sign of desperation in the mayoral race's final days. Bush affirmed his intention to fully repay the city for the travel costs.
