Five Vance County detention officers indicted for facilitating inmate fight
Five detention officers face misdemeanor charges for allegedly arranging a fight between two women inmates at Vance County jail.
Five detention officers at the Vance County Detention Center have been indicted on Class 1 misdemeanor charges for allegedly allowing and facilitating a fight between two women inmates, according to ABC11 WTVD and the Raleigh News & Observer.
The incident reportedly occurred on August 12, and the officers are accused of willfully failing to discharge their duties by arranging the physical altercation and neglecting to secure the inmates' safety, which led to injury, court documents show.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is leading the inquiry into the case, with spokesperson Chad Flowers confirming the investigation. The five officers were also fired from their positions.
The indicted officers include Kristy Troutman of Oxford, Jessica Alston and Bonthier Francis of Warrenton, and Jabarri Davis and Malajah Daniels of Henderson. District Attorney Mike Waters noted the fight appears not to have been spontaneous, though he was not aware of all details.
The charges highlight concerns about jail safety and oversight in Vance County, with local officials now addressing the allegations as the legal process moves forward.
