A Durham police officer is facing charges in Florida following a car crash and subsequent assaults, WRAL reported. The incident occurred on July 8 in Marco Island, near Naples, where the officer reportedly drove off the road and hit multiple trees.

Marco Island Police said the officer became combative when they tried to assist him, assaulting one officer. After being arrested on two counts of battery and one count of resisting, he allegedly grabbed and shoved a corrections deputy at the jail, according to WRAL.

Durham Police confirmed they are aware of the incident and that the officer has been on administrative leave since. They are conducting an internal review to understand the circumstances and ensure appropriate actions are taken.

Durham Police directed further questions about the arrest to the Marco Island Police Department, as reported by WRAL.
