Gary McCoy wins District 8 supervisor race in San Francisco's Castro neighborhood
Gary McCoy secured 65% of the vote after ranked-choice tally to represent District 8, which includes the Castro and nearby areas.
Gary McCoy has won the District 8 supervisor race to represent the Castro and surrounding neighborhoods in San Francisco, according to the SF Standard. McCoy defeated Darshini Patel, a former DoorDash employee, with 13,687 votes after ranked-choice voting, compared to Patel's 7,499 votes.
The race saw a significant change after moderate front-runner Manny Yekutiel dropped out last month amid sexual assault allegations, as reported by the SF Standard and Mission Local. Yekutiel had been leading the race and had outraised both McCoy and Patel by a wide margin.
McCoy, a former aide to Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, declared victory with 65% of the vote after ranked-choice voting permutations, according to Mission Local. Patel received 35% of the vote. The District 8 area includes the Castro, Noe Valley, Duboce Triangle, and Cole Valley neighborhoods.
At McCoy's campaign party, supporters celebrated the win. McCoy spoke about his recovery from drug addiction and emphasized unity over division within the progressive community, as reported by Mission Local.
The election results mark a notable shift in the District 8 race after Yekutiel's exit, with McCoy now set to represent the diverse neighborhoods in the district.
