Charlotte police closed the intersection of South Tryon and West Bland streets Saturday afternoon after reports of a natural gas leak, WBTV reported.

Nearby residents had called 911 to report the smell of natural gas in the area, prompting emergency response from authorities.

The Charlotte Fire Department said Piedmont Natural Gas was on scene working to repair the damaged gas line.

Officials have not provided an estimated time for the repair to be completed and asked residents to call 911 only for immediate emergencies.

Police advised the public to avoid the area while crews continue their work and the streets remain closed.
