Heavy rains flood Sawgrass Mills, Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, stranding cars
About 8 inches of rain caused flooding around Sawgrass Mills and Amerant Bank Arena, stranding cars and closing mall entrances.
Heavy rainfall in Broward County led to significant flooding near Sawgrass Mills Mall and Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, CBS News Miami reported. The flooding stranded hundreds of cars in parking lots and on nearby streets, with water levels reaching up to car doors in some areas.
Sunrise police responded by closing several entrances to Sawgrass Mills Mall due to the hazardous conditions. Video footage showed hockey fans wading through knee-high water after a Florida Panthers game, as reported by WSVN 7News and CBS News Miami.
In Plantation Acres, a nearby neighborhood, dozens of blocks were submerged under water. Residents described the flooding as severe, with some having to leave their vehicles behind. Neighbors and police helped watch over cars as water levels rose above door bottoms, according to CBS News Miami.
Local residents and drivers were urged to avoid flooded roads due to the risk of vehicle damage and safety concerns. Limousine driver Vandral Meyers warned about potential damage to the underside of vehicles from driving through floodwaters.
Additional showers and possible flooding were expected later Tuesday afternoon, though less widespread, with residents bracing for continued impacts, CBS News Miami noted.
