Heidi Brandt elected as sole conservative on Sarasota County School Board
Heidi Brandt won the runoff to join Sarasota County School Board, shifting the board's political balance.
Heidi Brandt has been elected to the Sarasota County School Board, becoming the only conservative member on the five-person board, WUSF reported. This election outcome follows a shift from a 3-2 conservative majority to a more balanced board after the August election.
Brandt, who is 46 and serves as the Parent Teacher Organization president at Southside Elementary in Sarasota, said her involvement in school matters is motivated by her daughter's education. She emphasized representing diverse community voices without bringing politics into her role.
The race for the District 1 seat went to a runoff because no candidate secured more than half the votes initially. Brandt will fill the seat left vacant by Bridget Ziegler, a Moms for Liberty co-founder who chose not to run again.
Brandt has a background in exercise science and highlighted her campaign focus on serving children and improving math and reading scores rather than pursuing political ambitions, according to WUSF.
WFLA 8 noted that the conservative majority on the Sarasota County School Board disappeared after the August election, leading to the runoff that Brandt won to replace the outgoing board chair.
