Holiday travelers warned about restrictions on cheapest airline tickets
Travel experts advise Washington area travelers to understand limits of basic economy fares before booking holiday flights.
WTOP reported that holiday travelers should be aware of the restrictions tied to basic economy airline tickets, which are often the cheapest but come with many limitations.
Katy Nastro, a travel analyst with the flight-tracking app Flighty, told WTOP that basic economy fares usually only include the seat itself, with extras like seat selection or extra legroom either prohibited or requiring additional fees.
Nastro noted that these tickets often have limited or no options for changes, which can be problematic for travelers needing flexibility during the holiday season.
She explained that paying $50 to $100 more for a main economy ticket typically offers more flexibility and benefits such as price protection, where travelers can get credit if the fare drops after booking.
With Thanksgiving approaching, Nastro said domestic airfare deals are becoming scarce and holiday fares are 20% to 30% higher than last year, urging travelers to consider alternative destinations to find better values.
WTOP's report highlights the importance for Washington area holiday travelers to carefully review fare restrictions before purchasing airline tickets to avoid unexpected costs or inconveniences.
