Independence Golf Club sold for $9.5 million in Powhatan-Chesterfield area
Heritage Golf Group buys Independence Golf Club's real estate for $9.53 million, adding to its Central Virginia portfolio.
Independence Golf Club, located on the Powhatan-Chesterfield line, was sold for $9.53 million for its real estate, according to county property records reported by Richmond BizSense. The sale price covered roughly 260 acres, mostly in Powhatan, but did not include the business assets, whose sale price was not disclosed.
The sale of the business assets closed on September 10, while the real estate transaction was recently recorded with the counties. The club had been operated by Pros Inc., owned by Giff Breed, who purchased it in 2013 for $3 million.
Heritage Golf Group, based in Northern Virginia, now controls three golf courses in central Virginia, including the Dominion Club in Henrico County and Spring Creek Golf Club in Louisa County, in addition to Independence.
Observers in the local golf industry are awaiting news on whether Heritage Golf will convert Independence from a public, daily fee club to a members-only private club. Representatives of Heritage Golf did not respond to requests for comment.
Independence Golf Club opened in 2001 as part of the Founders Bridge residential development and features an 18-hole course and a nine-hole short course. The club was founded with support from Richmond benefactors including E. Claiborne Robins Jr. and Harry Easterly Jr.
