Kohl’s, J.C. Penney, and Saks Fifth Avenue are among the department stores closely watched this holiday season as a critical test for their business stability, Retail Dive reported.

Department stores traditionally perform well during the holidays by offering a wide range of merchandise and creating festive shopping experiences, making them popular destinations, according to Simon-Kucher’s 2026 Holiday Shopping Report.

While some department stores like Dillard’s, Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, and Nordstrom have shown positive or stable results recently, Kohl’s, J.C. Penney, and Saks face significant challenges in converting holiday demand into profitable sales and cash flow, said analysts including Glenn McMahon of MAC Advisory and Consulting.

Kohl’s has been attempting a turnaround for several years with limited success, making this holiday season particularly important for the retailer’s future prospects.

The outcome of this season will be closely watched as an indicator of whether these retailers can address deeper business challenges beyond just consumer spending levels.
