BNEF raises US energy storage forecast by 30% amid strong solar pairing
BloombergNEF reports rapid growth in US energy storage, driven by hyperscalers and supportive federal policy.
BloombergNEF (BNEF) has increased its forecast for US energy storage deployment by 30%, citing a surge in firm orders from hyperscalers for on-site and nearby storage projects, according to Utility Dive.
Energy storage installations in the US have significantly outpaced solar capacity additions in recent years, with the global solar-to-storage ratio dropping from 94:1 in 2016 to 7:1 in 2026, BNEF said.
By the end of 2025, the US had installed 20.7 GW of energy storage capacity paired with 41.3 GW of solar, representing about 30% of total colocated solar-plus-storage capacity globally.
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which extended federal tax credits for energy storage through 2035, is expected to support a pipeline of 83.7 GW of storage paired with 149.2 GW of solar, according to BNEF.
Despite trade barriers imposed by the Trump administration, including a 40.9% duty on stationary storage batteries from mainland China, the US market continues to grow, especially in on-site data center storage, projected to reach 4.9 GW this year.
BNEF anticipates the solar-to-storage capacity ratio to stabilize at 4:1 by 2030, with steady annual deployments thereafter as the energy storage industry matures.
