LAPD officers opened fire on a suspect Saturday afternoon in downtown Los Angeles after the suspect charged at them with a metal bar, CBS News Los Angeles reported.

The incident occurred just before 1:30 p.m. near Fourth and Omar streets, where officers encountered a robbery suspect holding a metal bar in one hand and a long tree branch in the other.

Police told the suspect multiple times to drop the weapons, but he did not comply. Officers then deployed foam rounds, which had no effect.

The suspect charged at the officers, striking one with the metal bar. At that point, officers opened fire, hitting the suspect. One officer was also injured during the encounter.

Both the suspect and the injured officer were transported to the hospital and are currently in stable condition, according to CBS News Los Angeles.
