Jaylen Edgar, who was convicted for a shooting on Halloween night in 2024 in downtown Orlando, has been sentenced to life in prison, FOX 35 Orlando reported. The shooting resulted in two deaths and seven injuries among people gathered near Orange Avenue for Halloween celebrations.

Edgar was found guilty of two counts of first-degree murder and seven counts of attempted murder. At the time of the shooting, he was 17 years old and thus ineligible for the death penalty, according to FOX 35 Orlando.

The victims who died were identified as Tyrek Hill, 25, and Timothy Schmidt Jr., 19. Prosecutors argued Edgar intended to kill people when he opened fire, while the defense did not dispute the shooting but contested the claim that it was premeditated.

Edgar's attorney told FOX 35 Orlando that they plan to appeal the sentence, which must be done within 30 days. Several survivors of the shooting testified during the trial, providing accounts of the incident.

This sentencing follows months after the guilty verdict was reached, marking a significant development in the case that affected the Orlando community during a major public event.
