Missing climber found dead on Mount Whitney after storm delays recovery
Authorities recovered the body of a missing climber on Mount Whitney after weather delayed search efforts.
The body of a missing climber was found covered in snow on Mount Whitney’s Mountaineer’s Route, according to the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office and KTLA 5. The man was reported missing by motel staff in Lone Pine who noted he missed checkout and left personal belongings behind.
Authorities received the missing person report on October 19 and initially had limited information about the climber’s route or whereabouts. The man had told motel staff he planned to hike in the area, and his vehicle was later found at Whitney Portal.
The U.S. Forest Service confirmed the climber had a permit for the Mountaineer’s Route, which is a shorter but steeper path to the summit compared to the more common Whitney Trail. A California Highway Patrol helicopter located the man’s body on October 20, but a storm delayed recovery operations.
Once weather conditions improved, search-and-rescue teams reached the climber’s location near Iceberg Lake at about 13,600 feet elevation and recovered the remains by helicopter. The Inyo County coroner’s office is handling identification, but authorities have not released the man’s name.
Mount Whitney, at 14,505 feet, is the tallest mountain in the continental United States.
