Newport Beach faces flooding from record-setting high tides
Residents and businesses in Newport Beach are dealing with flooding as record high tides continue to impact the area.
Newport Beach experienced significant flooding on Monday due to record-setting high tides, affecting streets, homes, and businesses along the Balboa Peninsula, CBS News Los Angeles reported.
This flooding event marks the second time in two weeks that the area has been impacted by king tides, with even higher tides anticipated in the coming days, according to local officials.
Residents and business owners are actively working to protect their properties, using sandbags and other measures, but some barriers have been breached by the powerful tides and waves, CBS News Los Angeles noted.
A family on Balboa Boulevard was seen sweeping ocean water from their living room, while businesses like Pizza Pete's struggled to manage flooding despite recent cleanup efforts from previous incidents.
Officials highlighted that Monday's tide was about an inch and a half higher than any previously recorded, with Tuesday's tides expected to be at least two inches higher, posing ongoing challenges for the community.
The flooding is compounded by the Kelvin wave phenomenon, which has intensified the high tides and surf, making it difficult for residents and businesses to fully prevent water intrusion.
