Royal Caribbean aims to capture half of guests' vacation spending with Sandals deal
Royal Caribbean expects to boost its share of travelers' vacation budgets to 50% by acquiring a stake in Sandals Resorts.
Royal Caribbean Group announced plans to purchase a 50% stake in Sandals Resorts and Beaches Resorts, aiming to expand its share of guests' annual vacation spending. According to Skift, the cruise operator currently captures about 20% to 25% of its guests' vacation budgets but expects this to rise to roughly 50% with the addition of all-inclusive resorts to its offerings.
The company reported better-than-expected third-quarter results, driven by strong demand in Europe, and raised its full-year guidance. Close to half of its guests this year are expected to be repeat customers, indicating a loyal customer base that Royal Caribbean hopes to retain within its ecosystem.
CEO Jason Liberty emphasized the importance of keeping customers within Royal Caribbean's network, stating that if a customer chooses a competing cruise brand, it is considered a failure. The integration of Sandals Resorts is seen as a strategy to connect loyalty programs and offer comprehensive travel experiences.
The deal is expected to enhance Royal Caribbean's ability to offer diverse vacation options, combining cruise experiences with Caribbean all-inclusive resorts. This move could have implications for competitors in the Caribbean hospitality sector, as Royal Caribbean seeks to solidify its position in travelers' vacation planning.
