The City of San Diego has started a series of public service workshops aimed at helping senior citizens prepare for the potential impacts of the Super El Niño currently affecting Southern California, FOX 5 San Diego reported. The workshops, held at locations like the Senior Center in Claremont, offer free sandbags and important safety information to residents living in flood-prone areas.

Captain Jason Shanley of the Office of Emergency Services emphasized the importance of early preparation for seniors, encouraging them to have groceries, water, first aid kits, and necessary medications ready to get through possible emergencies. The city is also providing delivery of up to 10 free sandbags to seniors who cannot handle them on their own.

Recent high tides combined with a Kelvin Wave linked to El Niño caused flooding in Mission Bay for three consecutive days, raising concerns among emergency officials about future flooding risks. The high tide reached 8.5 feet, surpassing the usual 7-foot tide and nearly breaching sand berms protecting the boardwalk.

The workshops aim to educate seniors on flood zones, emergency go bags, and other precautions to enhance their safety during the El Niño event. The city’s efforts reflect a proactive approach to community preparedness as weather conditions evolve.

Residents interested in attending future workshops or receiving sandbags can contact the City of San Diego’s Office of Emergency Services for more information.
