Bill Walton Classic basketball event debuts Saturday in San Diego

The Bill Walton Classic, a new college basketball doubleheader, will hold its first edition this Saturday in San Diego, the Times of San Diego reported.

The event honors Bill Walton, a celebrated San Diego athlete and NBA legend who played for the San Diego Clippers at Pechanga Arena early in his career.

The inaugural games include San Diego State men’s basketball facing Colorado in a nationally televised match on USA Network, followed by a women’s game between the University of San Diego and UC San Diego teams.

Both games are official NCAA Division I regular-season contests and will count toward the teams' standings, according to the report.

The Bill Walton Classic was created by Walton’s foundation and aims to celebrate his legacy.
