The New York Times in talks to buy Letterboxd for $330 million
The New York Times Company is reportedly negotiating to acquire the movie social network Letterboxd for $330 million.
The New York Times Company is reportedly in exclusive negotiations to acquire Letterboxd, a social network for film lovers, for approximately $330 million, according to TechCrunch and The Verge.
Letterboxd has experienced significant growth, expanding from 3 million users in January 2021 to 28 million by April 2026, with more than half of its users under the age of 35, TechCrunch reported. The platform offers free access with optional paid subscriptions for advanced features.
Other potential buyers included film studios Sony Pictures Entertainment and A24, but A24 was reportedly priced out of the deal, according to TechCrunch. The New York Times acquisition talks include the possibility that Letterboxd’s co-founders would remain in charge while reporting to a Times executive, as reported by The Verge.
If acquired, Letterboxd would likely continue to operate as a standalone platform for the foreseeable future, with integration of The New York Times Company’s advertising technology, The Verge noted. The Times has previously acquired other digital properties such as Wordle, Wirecutter, and The Athletic.
Neither The New York Times Company nor Letterboxd’s parent company, Tiny Ltd., have commented on the acquisition talks, according to both sources.
