The Trump administration is attempting to prosecute former FBI Director James Comey for an alleged leak of classified information dating back about ten years, WRAL reported.

Comey's lawyers have dismissed the effort as invalid and beyond the statute of limitations for filing a criminal indictment, according to WRAL and ABC11 WTVD.

Newly unsealed court documents reveal this move as part of a broader escalation by the Justice Department against Comey, who has been a vocal critic of President Trump, ABC11 WTVD reported.

The Justice Department stated it filed a 'criminal information' to extend the statute of limitations, a practice approved by multiple federal courts, ABC11 WTVD noted.

Comey responded by emphasizing his innocence and support for an independent judiciary, calling the prosecution attempt an abuse of the Justice Department, ABC11 WTVD reported.

This development comes amid politically charged investigations leading up to the upcoming midterm elections, according to ABC11 WTVD.

The Justice Department declined further comment on the ongoing criminal investigation, ABC11 WTVD said.
