Durham church reopens nearly 3 years after devastating fire
Charity Christian Fellowship Church in Durham welcomes congregation back after fire in 2023.
Nearly three years after a fire severely damaged its building, the Charity Christian Fellowship Church in Durham has reopened for worship, WRAL reported. The fire occurred on November 4, 2023, in the McDougald Terrace neighborhood, where the church is located.
The church had been closed since the COVID-19 pandemic, with plans to reopen later in 2023 before the fire disrupted those intentions, according to WRAL. Pastor Shawlin Dunn described the moment she learned about the fire as frantic and distressing.
This fire was one of several challenges the church has faced. Pastor Dunn noted that the church had been broken into multiple times over the years, including nine break-ins in one month during the first year after moving to the neighborhood. Some break-ins involved attempts to set the church on fire.
Despite these hardships, the congregation has now returned to worship in their restored building. The reopening marks a significant milestone for the church community after nearly three years of closure caused by the fire and earlier pandemic restrictions.
WRAL's coverage highlights the resilience of the Charity Christian Fellowship Church and its members as they rebuild and continue their religious activities in Durham.
