BAAQMD to vote on limiting new gas water heaters sales in 2028
Bay Area Air Quality Management District will consider restrictions on gas water heater sales with exemptions for affordability and technical issues.
The Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) is set to vote on November 4 on a proposal to restrict the sales of new gas-fueled water heaters starting in 2028, according to Palo Alto Online.
This proposal is a significantly weakened version of a complete ban on new gas water heaters that was passed in 2023 and scheduled to take effect in two months. The current plan includes exemptions that could apply to up to 50% of installations.
BAAQMD staff have conducted extensive studies over the past three years, analyzing technical constraints and cost challenges associated with the ban. Feedback from Bay Area residents highlighted concerns about affordability, as gas water heaters typically cost thousands of dollars to replace.
The 24-member BAAQMD Board of Directors is expected to approve this more flexible approach. If the board rejects the proposal, the original full ban on new gas water heaters will be implemented as planned.
This decision directly affects residents in San Jose and the broader Bay Area who may be considering water heater replacements in the coming years.
