Byron Donalds to become Florida's first Black governor, DeSantis supports transition
Republican Byron Donalds won Florida governor race, pledges to continue DeSantis' conservative agenda and govern for all Floridians.
Republican Congressman Byron Donalds made history by becoming Florida's first Black governor, according to WFLA. He defeated Democrat David Jolly in a closely watched race with heavy voter turnout from both parties.
Governor Ron DeSantis, who is term-limited and will leave office in January, expressed confidence in Donalds' ability to succeed him. DeSantis said Donalds plans to build on his conservative agenda, which he believes gives Donalds a chance to do well.
Donalds emphasized that addressing affordability will be a key focus of his first term, including tackling property insurance, housing concerns, and healthcare costs. He also stated his intention to govern effectively for all Floridians, not just those who voted for him.
David Jolly, the defeated Democratic candidate, urged Donalds to remember that those who voted for him are constituents, not enemies. Donalds responded by affirming his commitment to represent all Floridians.
DeSantis also commented on the national midterm elections, noting Florida remains a stronghold for the Republican Party amid setbacks elsewhere in the country.
The transition of power will take place in January when Donalds assumes office as Florida's governor.
