The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that Dr. Jennifer Shuford, the agency's chief medical officer and deputy director, will resign effective November 12, ABC11 WTVD reported.

Dr. Shuford was hired for the chief medical officer role in April and cited her desire to spend more time with family as the reason for her departure, according to the CDC statement.

CDC Director Dr. Erica Schwartz expressed gratitude for Shuford's leadership during a challenging and evolving period at the agency.

Satish Pillai will serve as the acting CDC chief medical officer and deputy director following Shuford's resignation.
