EMS teams from Charleston and nearby counties compete in Dorchester training event
Emergency responders from Charleston County and neighboring areas gathered in Dorchester County for a skills competition and training conference.
Dorchester County Emergency Medical Services hosted an annual conference and competition on Thursday, bringing together first responders from across the region, including Charleston County EMS, to enhance their skills and teamwork, Live 5 WCSC reported.
The event attracted 140 attendees, nearly triple the number from six years ago when it began. Five teams competed, representing Lancaster County EMS, Charleston County EMS, Dorchester County EMS, Central Berkeley Fire and EMS, and St. Johns Fire Department.
Each team was presented with an emergency scenario and evaluated on their response, focusing on decision-making and collaboration under pressure. EMS Battalion Chief Scott Chisholm noted the competition adds friendly rivalry and educational value, helping teams learn from mistakes.
Beyond the competition, the conference offered opportunities for first responders to learn about new medications, medical devices, and procedures. It also fostered interaction among EMS providers, firefighters, and police officers from different agencies outside of emergency situations.
Chisholm emphasized the importance of such preparation, as first responders must be ready for emergencies at any time, and the event helps build skills and relationships that improve their effectiveness in the field.
