Felony gun charge dropped for Cary Senate candidate after police standoff
Wake County DA drops felony charge against Libertarian candidate after gun found to be antique.
The Wake County District Attorney's Office dismissed a felony gun charge Tuesday against Jonathan D. Miller, a Libertarian candidate for a state Senate seat, following an hours-long standoff with Cary police on Monday, WRAL reported.
Miller was initially charged with felony possession of a firearm as a felon, but investigators later determined the gun was an antique and did not meet the legal definition of a firearm, according to court records cited by WRAL.
Miller was granted a $50,000 secured bond for misdemeanor charges, including communicating threats to a public officer and going armed to the terror of the people. These charges stemmed from posts on the social media platform X that authorities described as concerning and threatening to officers.
One post referenced the police pursuing him with guns drawn, and another mentioned having six shots and the high ground, according to WRAL. CBS17 also reported that Miller allegedly threatened Cary police while fleeing from them with a gun.
