A 72-year-old man from Hope Mills has been charged with attempted first-degree murder following an incident where a 16-year-old was struck by a car in October, according to ABC11 WTVD.

The incident occurred near Dove Drive and Hunting Ridge Road on October 13, when the juvenile pedestrian was hit by a vehicle that initially fled the scene, the Hope Mills Police Department said.

Investigators identified the driver using witness statements and the town's Flock camera system. The driver is accused of using his Honda Accord as a deadly weapon with intent to kill the teen, police said.

Court documents allege the man threatened the teen by yelling at him before driving toward him twice, causing the teen to jog away. The driver then left the scene without stopping, resulting in injury to the teen.

The man faces charges including attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, felony hit-and-run involving injury, and communicating threats. He was arrested on October 13 and is held without bond at the Cumberland County Detention Center.

The Hope Mills Police Department stated the investigation remains active.
