Charleston Police Department reported that Cumberland Street was closed between Meeting Street and Church Street Monday morning because of a gas leak. The closure also included the Cumberland Street parking garage, and citizens were advised to avoid the area while officers worked at the scene, WCBD reported.

Dominion Energy crews responded after a third-party contractor struck and damaged a gas line, WCSC reported. This incident led to the temporary closure of the street and parking garage in downtown Charleston.

Later Monday, the street and parking garage were reopened after the situation was addressed, according to WCSC. Authorities and utility crews managed the response to ensure public safety and restore access.

Residents and visitors in downtown Charleston experienced temporary disruptions due to the gas leak, but the area has since returned to normal operations. Local officials continue to monitor the situation as needed.
