North Charleston stabbing leads to officer-involved shooting on Charter Drive
A stabbing incident in North Charleston escalated to a police shooting after a suspect barricaded inside a home.
North Charleston police are investigating a stabbing that occurred Sunday evening in the 5300 block of Charter Drive, WCBD reported. An adult woman who was stabbed sought help at a neighbor's house, which led to a police response around 5 p.m., according to Live 5 WCSC.
The suspect barricaded themselves inside a home with another victim, prompting a standoff involving North Charleston Police Department Crisis Negotiators and the SWAT Team, WCSC said. After negotiations failed, the SWAT team entered the home.
During the entry, the suspect was shot and died at the scene despite efforts to save their life, Live 5 WCSC reported. The second victim was treated by first responders and taken to the hospital.
The Charleston County Coroner’s Office is assisting with the investigation, and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has been notified, according to WCSC. Police advised residents to avoid the area or remain indoors until further notice, WCBD added.
Authorities have not released further details as the investigation continues. Updates will be provided when it is safe to do so, WCBD stated.
