Heavy rain causes flooding in South Florida suburbs, rain to ease Thursday
South Florida suburbs have seen up to 15 inches of rain causing flooding; drier weather expected Thursday through weekend.
South Florida suburbs, including areas between Weston and Sunrise, have experienced heavy rainfall totaling about 13 to 15 inches over the past four days, according to meteorologist George Rizzuto of the National Weather Service in Miami, as reported by WUSF.
Other regions in Florida, such as Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast, have been hit with even higher rainfall amounts of 15 to 20 inches, leading to flooded roads and submerged vehicles, according to WUSF.
The flooding has been described by National Weather Service officials as a "one-in-1,000-year event," with Brevard County deputies assisting over 100 people caught in rising waters, according to Florida Today and WUSF.
The flooding also impacted local events and businesses; Florida Panthers fans faced knee-deep floodwaters leaving a game, and Sawgrass Mills mall delayed opening due to flooding, WUSF reported.
Despite the heavy rain and flooding, Sunrise officials reported no major road closures or severe incidents on city roadways as of Wednesday morning, according to a statement cited by WUSF.
The National Weather Service forecasts that the rain will taper off Wednesday afternoon, with drier air and sunny skies expected from Thursday through the weekend, WUSF said.
